TOSHIKATSU ENDO (1950, Gifu, Japan)

Endo's artistic work stems from the realization of "a certain sense of absence, a feeling of something lacking" and the unattainable desire to fill this "lack" finds expression in the trail left by his work. Having seen the lack in human existence and expressing a preference for the primitive, surely the object he will choose to lay before us will be the imaginative animal, man, his deeds and history. The works of Toshikatsu Endo draw the viewer to them through their shape, scale and textural energy. While offering an image and interpretation of such elemental forces as fire and water, his work also has the power to make us consider the imagination and vision that was required to give birth to such images.
